His mother’s name is Saraswati Thakur. Dhiraj’s elder brother, Tirath Singh Thakur (TS Thakur) served as the 43rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) from 3 December 2015 to 4 January 2017.

Career
Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur began practising law at the Delhi High Court in 1989. In November 2010, his enrollment was transferred to the Bar Council of Jammu & Kashmir. Subsequently, he joined the chambers of his brother Justice Tirath Singh Thakur. In 2011, he was designated as a Senior Advocate. On 8 March 2013, he was promoted to the position of Judge in the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court. Later, on 10 June 2022, he was transferred to the Bombay High Court as a Judge. While serving as a judge, Dhiraj Singh Thakur disposed of a good number of cases. He has often shown his prowess and legal acumen in all the branches of law.

On 9 February 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the appointment of Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur as Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court. Later, on 5 July 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium comprising the CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Sanjiv Khanna proposed to appoint Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, which was established by a Presidential order post bifurcation, on 1 January 2019. The recommendation also said that,
In view of the above, the Collegium, in supersession of its recommendation dated 09 February 2023, resolves to recommend that Mr Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur be appointed as Chief Justice of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh.”
Following the promotion of Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra to the Supreme Court, the position of Chief Justice of the A.P. High Court became vacant on 19 May 2023.
