Reportedly, Rana, his wife, and Yuva Swabhimani Sanghatana had launched a protest against the government, demanding a hike in the minimum guarantee price of raw cotton from Rs 3,300 to Rs 6,000 per quintal. While he was being held in Central Jail Amravati, Rana went on a hunger strike, which led to a severe deterioration of his health. Narayan Rane, Prithviraj Chavan’s emissary and the Maharashtra minister for Industries, tried to convince Rana to end his fast over the telephone, but Rana refused to coordinate.
