19 cops injured, several vehicles vandalized in mob attack at Palghar factory | Thane News

MUMBAI: At least 19 police officers and a few workers were injured while vehicles and properties were vandalized following rioting by a labour union of a stainless steel manufacturing company in Tarapur MIDC, Palghar on Saturday.
A case of attempt to murder and rioting has been registered against 27 workers. Police security has been beefed up around the factory.
Boisar MIDC police said a new union comprising over 150 workers, formed in the factory, had threatened to strike and stop work from May 16. The management had obtained a court order against the strike and members of the union were restrained from entering the factory premises.
“On Saturday afternoon, members of the union forcibly entered the factory premises and went on a rampage,” said police.
Workers were reportedly told that manufacturing work would be undertaken by contract workers if the union, consisting of permanent workers, went on a strike.
A police team reached the factory and tried to pacify the workers who went on a rampage. Police said that the mob went around destroying police vans, factory property and some auto rickshaws parked outside the factory. Police had to lathicharge the mob. Several onlookers also sustained injuries in the incident.
Workers alleged that they were assaulted by members of the management and their response was retaliation. Atleast eight to 10 workers sustained injuries in the rioting. The injured cops have been admitted to a hospital in Boisar.
