  • Surjit Bindrakhia was an Indian singer who was known for his Punjabi songs like ‘Dupatta Tera Satrang da,’ ‘Tera Yaar Bolda,’ ‘Sanu Tedi Tedi Takdi tu,’ and ‘Lakk Tunoo Tunoo.’
  • Surjit’s birth name was ‘Surjit Bains,’ but because he wanted to represent his village ‘Bindrakh’ in his songs, he decided to keep his stage name ‘Surjit Bindrakhia.’
  • Surjit Bindrakhia’s father, Sucha Singh, wanted Surjit to pursue wrestling; however, he was only interested in music and wanted to make singing his profession.
  • Surjit released his debut album ‘Munda Ki Mangda’ in 1991, which was composed by the Indian composer and music producer Atul Sharma, and all the songs in the album were written by the Indian singer and lyricist Shamsher Sandhu.

  • Apart from dance numbers, Surjit Bindrakhia also released many religious albums like ‘Kamban Dil Gaddaran De’ (1992), ‘Janam Dihara Khalse Da’ (1999), and ‘Singho Sewadar Bano’ (2001).

  • In 1992, Surjit held the Guinness World Record for the longest Alaap/hekk (the opening section of a typical North Indian classical performance) that he sang in the song titled ‘Jugni’ from his album titled ‘Addi Utte Ghum’ (1990).
  • In 1994, he made an appearance in the song titled ‘Akhara’ (live performance) from the Punjabi film ‘Kachehari.’
  • On 17 November 2003, Surjit Bindrakhia passed away in his sleep after suffering from a cardiac arrest. According to his wife, she tried waking Surjit up but he didn’t respond to which she called their family doctor who confirmed Surjit’s death. Many prominent personalities including Hans Raj Hans, Sardool Sikander, Gurdas Maan, and Surinder Shinda reached village Bindrakh to attend the last rites of the singer. [3]Tribune India
  • Surjit belonged to a family of farmers and loved farming in the fields of his village Bindrakh.
  • Punjabi lyricist and singer Shamsher Sandhu was the first person to recognise the talent of Surjit Bindrakhia and gave him an opportunity to sing on a bigger platform. Most of Surjit’s songs were written by Shamsher Sandhu.
  • He was a trained wrestler as his father was a wrestler. Surjit was also the winner of a gold medal in the inter-university wrestling championship.
  • Indian actor Sonu Sood made his music video debut with Surjit’s song titled ‘Ghungroo’ from the album titled ‘Billiaan Akhiyaan,’ which was released in 2001.
  • Before getting into the Punjabi singing industry, Surjit used to sing folk songs for his university’s Bhangra team.
