| Controversy | Convicted for Raping a Minor under Guardianship: On 21 August 2023, Delhi Police charged Premoday Khakha for sexually assaulting his late friend’s minor daughter over an extended period. He was apprehended under IPC Sections 376(2)(f) (rape), 509 (outraging a woman’s modesty), 506 (criminal intimidation), 323 (causing hurt), 313 (causing miscarriage without woman’s consent), and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) as well as under Sections 6 and 21 of Pocso Act. Khakha’s wife, Seema Rani, was also arrested in the case; she was arrested for abetting the crime and providing abortion pills to the victim.
The girl and her family met Premoday Khakha at a church in Burari, Delhi, in 2020. As the families became closer, the girl starting calling Khakha ‘mama’ (maternal uncle) and her mother started considering him as her brother. After the girl’s father passed away, her mother believed a change in surroundings under Khakha’s care might help her daughter’s mental state. Reportedly, the girl started living at Premoday’s residence from 1 October 2020, yet, her health kept deteriorating, and she returned to her mother in January 2021. When her mother took her to a hospital for medical checkup, the girl revealed that she was raped multiple times by Premoday Khakha at his residence, and his wife gave her abortion pills when Khakha impregnated her.
